‘A number of people’ died of COVID-19 before being admitted to hospital: Ontario’s chief coroner

CA, 23 Apr 2021
Ontario’s chief coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer said Thursday that “a number of people” in Ontario have died of COVID-19 before they could be admitted to hospital, adding that such deaths are “new, unfortunate and sad.”

Huyer said in these cases where people died in the community, it did not appear from their symptoms that they needed hospitalization.

“It’s not that people were ignoring symptoms,” he said. “These were people that did have stable condition and then deteriorated very quickly to their unfortunate deaths.”

Huyer said Thursday that such cases were not seen to the same degree during the first and second waves of the virus.
