Southern India heavy rains cause major flooding, at least 15 dead

CA, 18 Oct 2021
Floods triggered by heavy rains have led to loss of life and property in India's southern Kerala state, and brought normal life to a halt.

At least 15 deaths were reported in the worst-affected districts of Kottayam and Idukki by floods and landslides, according to reports.

Rescue operations were underway by Indian army and navy in affected areas.

In Pathanamthitta district, water from the overflowing Pampa River entered houses in the nearby areas while in Kochi City, fields, shops and houses were flooded with water.

"Water started rising and most of our stuff was damaged. We managed to save some vegetables, like onions, but most of our vegetables have been destroyed," said a vendor, Arun, on Sunday, Oct. 17.

The state was also a victim to the worst floods in a century in 2018, which killed at least 400 people and displaced around 200,000.

Annual rainfall is essential in India as rains support two-thirds of the 1.3 billion people living in rural areas who rely on farming. However, excessive rainfall causes problems like floods, landslides and water-borne diseases.
