Libya Elections: Was Paris summit a 'missed opportunity' to tackle core issues? • FRANCE 24

FRANCE24, 17 Nov 2021
Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi, the son of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, appeared for nearly the first time in a decade to register as a presidential candidate for a December vote planned to help end the years of chaos since his father was toppled. According to Emadeddin Badi, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, his candidacy is simply "another opportunistic moment for Saif" at a time where the Libyan political roadmap is not being respected in the lead-up to elections. Prior to the December 24th #elections, #Libya was supposed to achieve the following objectives: military unification, unifying the judiciary, the departure of foreign mercenaries and establishing the legal framework for elections. These objectives have yet to be fully met, explains Mr. Badi. And so "today we experienced, at least partly, the cost of that, in that Saif effectively is allowed to run."
