Thousands of migrants stranded at Belarus-Poland border in freezing temperatures

CA, 16 Nov 2021
Belarusian state TV released footage on Monday of a large group of migrants at the border as Polish guards observed them from the other side.

Thousands of migrants have travelled to Belarus in the hope of crossing into the European Union, only to find themselves trapped on the border in freezing conditions

Poland and the EU have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of trying to retaliate against EU sanctions by deliberately inviting and forcing migrants toward the Polish border.

Belarus says it’s trying to persuade migrants living in camps near its western border to return home, but with no success, President Alexander Lukashenko said on Monday.

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said Monday that a sixth round of sanctions on Belarus would be needed as what he called a "hybrid war" intensified on the border.

Migrants - mostly from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan - began appearing on Belarus' land borders with the EU this year, trying to cross into member states Lithuania, Latvia and Poland via routes not used before.
