Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced Tuesday that over 60 per cent of Albertans have voted to reject equalization payments from the Canadian constitution.

The results of the referendum were held during the province’s municipal elections on Oct. 18.

“We have heard the results. A clear majority 62 per cent of Albertans have rejected the fundamentally unfair equalization program. In other words, 62 per cent of Albertans are demanding a fair deal in the Canadian federation.” Kenney said.

Kenney said he will now table a motion in the Legislative Assembly to ratify these results.

According to the premier, if passed, the motion will formally initiate a constitutional amendment negotiation.
