Orthodox priest heckles Pope Francis during Greece visit to highlight migrant crisis

CA, 05 Dec 2021
Pope Francis arrived in Athens on Saturday for the second leg of a visit to the Mediterranean that aims to draw attention to the plight of migrants and refugees.

After a two-day visit to Cyprus, the pope travelled to Greece, one of the main entry points into the European Union for asylum-seekers fleeing war and poverty-stricken homelands in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

As the pope was entering the Orthodox Archbishopric in Athens, an elderly Orthodox priest shouted “Pope, you are a heretic,” a reminder of the lingering distrust between the two divided churches.

In a speech at the presidential palace, Francis urged a return to politics that favour the common good and are not steeped in instilling fear. He compared the plight of today's migrants and refugees, many of whom have died at sea, as a "horrendous modern Odyssey."
