Canada settles class action lawsuits over First Nations drinking water advisories

CA, 31 Jul 2021
Canada’s Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller on announced on Friday that the federal government has settled two class-action lawsuits involving dirty drinking water in First Nations communities.

The proposed settlement agreement is worth nearly $8 billion and is still awaiting court approval.

Included in the agreement are the Neskantaga First Nation – which has Canada’s longest-running boil water advisory — and the Tataskweyak Cree Nation, which has been under a boil water advisory since 2017.

The minister also announced the creation of a first nations advisory committee on safe drinking water.
