When Dr Ni Xijun first held this 146,000-year-old skull fossil in his hands, he said he knew something was different. The skull was first unearthed by a labourer in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province in 1933 only to be reburied for 85 years before being unearthed again. The leading paleoanthropologist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr Ni is part of a research team that concluded an exquisitely preserved Harbin cranium fossil was i a new category of its own – Homo longi, or Dragon Man – adding a new branch to humanity's ancient family tree.
