The United States reported its 400,000th death from Covid-19 on January 19, 2021. The grim news came nearly a year into the pandemic and in the final hours of Donald Trump’s presidency. A nationwide vaccination drive got under way in the US and new infection cases have been trending down, even as multiple US states reported infections from new variants of the coronavirus. Despite its great wealth and medical resources, the US has a far higher Covid-19 death toll than any other country in the world.
