In New Orleans, a city where funerals are usually jazz-filled community events, the per capita COVID-19 death rate at one point in 2020 topped the nation. Black New Orleanians have had to adjust how they say goodbye to their loved ones, improvising centuries-old burial rituals while contending with the disproportionate impact of the coronavirus. “Death Is Our Business” takes viewers inside two Black-owned funeral homes in New Orleans and follows funeral directors and staff grappling with new pandemic restrictions, as they work to safely prepare the deceased and bring comfort to a grieving city.
