Cicilline: Trump 'singularly responsible' for riot
AP, 10 Feb 2021
House impeachment managers opened their case against former President Donald Trump Tuesday, telling senators his actions on January 6th were an "unforgivable betrayal of the oath of office" and warning the violence "could have been much worse." (Feb. 9)
The prosecutors argued Trump "incited an armed, angry mob to riot," as he was involved in a "brazen attempt to retain power against the will of the American people."
Rep. David Cicilline, a Rhode Island Democrat, told senators January 6th was a "disaster of historic proportion," and said it "could have been much worse."
Cicilline said that the argument that the Senate doesn't have jurisdiction to try Trump rests on a fictional legal premise.
"President Trump was impeached while he was in office for conduct while he was in office. Period." Cicilline said. "The Senate can and should force President Trump to stand trial," he added.
