Manitoba Premier slams Trudeau government on vaccine delays, buys 2M doses of made-in-Canada vaccine

CA, 12 Feb 2021
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister blasted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal government over their lack of a made-in-Canada COVID-19 vaccine supply, saying their strategy of Canada first was in danger of becoming "Canada last" due to vaccine delays.

Canada’s vaccine rollout has been comparatively slow in relation to the rollouts of other major countries, with the country vaccinating 2.8 out of 100 people, according to statistics publication Our World In Data. On the other hand, Israel has vaccinated 62.1, the U.K. at 16.9 and the U.S. at 11 out of 100 people.

Criticism over why plans for domestic vaccine production were not made a year in advance — like the U.K. has done — has been widespread.

As a result, the Manitoba government has committed to buy two million doses of a made-in-Canada COVID-19 vaccine currently under clinical trial.

“Manitobans are Canadians first. We are investing not just for ourselves, but for all Canadians,” said Pallister.
