On Dec. 7, 1972, NASA sent the last crewed flight to the moon aboard Apollo 17. The spacecraft launched from Kennedy Space Center shortly after midnight, carrying astronauts Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmitt. Walter Cronkite anchored live coverage from the CBS News Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida with former astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra for the CBS News Special, “Farewell to the Moon: The Flight of Apollo 17.”
