Alberta's governing United Conservative Party has passed its controversial sovereignty act, but removed a provision which would have given Premier Danielle Smith extraordinary powers.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Alberta government is looking to pick a fight with Ottawa by introducing the legislation, which he is not interested in engaging.
