Trump impeachment: House votes to bring charge against president | FULL
CA, 14 Jan 2021
The U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump for "inciting an insurrection" after the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol, which followed the president's remarks at a nearby 'Stop the Steal' rally.
The majority of Republicans voted not to impeach Trump, but 10 members of the party broke ranks and joined Democrats to vote for impeachment, including the third-highest ranking Republican Rep. Liz Cheney.
The vote comes after several hours of debate by both parties on whether impeachment should move forward. With the vote completed, the article of impeachment will be sent to the Senate, which will then hold a trial on whether to convict Trump and remove him from office. He could also face possible disqualification from holding future office.
Trump’s fiery speech at a rally just before the Jan. 6 riot is at the center of the impeachment charge against him, even as the falsehoods he spread for months about election fraud are still being championed by some Republicans.
Before proceeding with impeachment, the House passed on Tuesday a resolution calling on Vice-President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
Pence said before the vote that he would take no such action, leaving lawmakers with impeachment as their only option to remove Trump from office before Jan. 20, when president-elect Joe Biden is set to be sworn in as president.
