Hong Kong police have charged 47 activists and former opposition lawmakers with conspiring to subvert state power under Hong Kong’s national security law. The group was among the 55 democracy campaigners arrested in January over their roles in an unofficial primary run-off election to increase opposition chances of taking control of the 70-member Legislative Council during now-postponed official elections. Authorities said the primary ran afoul of the national security law since it was part of a wider push to paralyse the government, provoke Beijing into ending the “one country, two systems” policy under which Hong Kong was governed, and trigger international sanctions against China. Those charged were ordered to appear in court on March 1, 2021.
