Canadian Foreign Minister holds press conference following meetings with US counterpart | FULL

CA, 27 Feb 2021
Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau held a press conference Friday following a meeting with his American counterpart, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The pandemic diplomacy at work between the United States and Canada is continuing, this time with the secretary of state.

Blinken virtually visited with Garneau as part of the Biden administration’s post-Trump fence-mending campaign.

Blinken’s “virtual trip” to Canada, which also includes a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, marks the secretary’s first bilateral video conferences since taking office.

During the post-meeting briefing, Garneau said Trudeau brought up the matter of the two detained Canadians in China, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, to President Joe Biden, he discussed the issue with Blinken again. Though the pair discussed “the two Michaels,” the foreign affairs minister said he couldn’t provide details on what was said.

Plus, the U.S. has released an intelligence report looking into the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. When asked if he agrees with the intelligence report that the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was responsible for Khashoggi’s murder, Garneau said the government has been asking for a “transparent” inquiry on what happened to the journalist, calling his murder an attack on journalism and freedom of the press. “We do need to get to the bottom of it,” said Garneau of the situation.
