Slain journalist Khashoggi's fiancée calls for sanctions against Saudi crown prince

CA, 05 Mar 2021
Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi said on Thursday she was relieved that a U.S. intelligence report implicated the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, in Khashoggi’s murder but added it is insufficient without sanctions against the Kingdom's de facto ruler.

Khashoggi, a U.S. resident who wrote opinion columns for the Washington Post criticizing Saudi policies, was killed and dismembered by a team linked to the crown prince in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

A U.S. intelligence report found the prince had approved the killing, and Washington imposed sanctions on some of those involved - but not the prince himself. The Saudi government, which has denied any involvement by the crown prince, rejected the report's findings.

Cengiz also told reporters after a hearing of the Turkish case that she wanted the evidence revealed in the U.S. intelligence report to be added to the Turkish case file.
