Coronavirus: US to squeeze more vaccine doses out of Pfizer's vials using special syringes

CA, 28 Jan 2021
Members of the White House COVID-19 response team held their first press briefing on Wednesday to highlight President Joe Biden’s administration efforts and vaccine rollout plan.

In his opening remarks, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci explained the potential therapeutics could have on bringing the pandemic under control while warning of the spread of new variants across the U.S.

Senior advisor Andy Slavitt said the task force has delivered 47 million vaccine doses to states and long-term care facilities and has administered about 24 million doses.

He also said the team is aiming to increase the number of doses squeezed from a Pfizer vial to six, by acquiring "low dead space syringes" which minimize the amount of vaccine left in the syringe after use. Pfizer’s vaccine is shipped in vials initially indicated to hold five doses.

President Biden has announced a 16 per cent increase in supply flowing to states every week for the next three weeks to a minimum of 10 million doses per week.

The president has invoked the defence production act to increase vaccine production to deliver on his promise of delivering 100 million vaccine doses in his first 100 days in office.
