Inauguration Day: Senior Democrats, GOP leaders pay tribute to Biden, Harris

CA, 21 Jan 2021
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell presented President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris with flags honouring their swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday. Biden's flag was the one that flew when he was sworn-in as a senator in 1973.

Pelosi spoke in reference to Biden's inaugural address, saying she hopes the flag would be a symbol "of the hope, the healing, just the enthusiasm you have for our country" and the president's talking point of "America United."

Then, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer presented a portrait of Biden and Harris each taking the oath of office.

McCarthy, a Republican, said he listened to Biden speaking about the tensions seen in the country and as leaders, it was their responsibility to "bind this nation's wounds." He said he wants to see them go forward and accomplish "great things."
