Speaking to reporters on Monday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney slammed reports the incoming Joe Biden administration in the U.S. planned to block implementation of the cross-border Keystone XL pipeline.

Biden’s plan is outlined in transition documents seen by The Canadian Press.

Kenney said the decision would endanger U.S. energy independence, framing the American decision as a choice to turn from a "close democratic ally" towards imports from "OPEC dictatorships."

Kenney said halting construction on the controversial project will be disastrous for both the Canadian and U.S. economies and their relationship.

“That would be, in our view, an economic and strategic error that would set back Canada-U.S. relations with the United States’ most important trading partner and strategic ally: Canada,” Kenney said on Monday morning.
