Myanmar coup: Military frees imprisoned protesters; 7-year-old girl killed by security forces

CA, 25 Mar 2021
Khin Myo Chit became the youngest victim so far in the crackdown against ongoing opposition to last month's military coup after she was shot by security personnel at her home in Mandalay on Tuesday. Her family buried her body in a Muslim ceremony on Wednesday.

Activists called for a silent strike following the death of the girl, the youngest of about 275 people killed in the bloody crackdown, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.

Myanmar's military junta freed hundreds of demonstrators arrested during its brutal crackdown on protests on Wednesday, while many businesses in Yangon remained shut and streets were deserted during the silent strike.

Several buses full of prisoners were seen driving out of Yangon's Insein jail in the morning.

There was no immediate word from authorities on how many prisoners were freed.
