Mark Zuckerberg says Trump "should be responsible" for role in Capitol riot, not Facebook
CA, 26 Mar 2021
Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg denied that his platform played a primary role in inciting violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, and instead said that former president Donald Trump and rioters should be held accountable for the "disgraceful" siege.
"I believe that the former president should be responsible for his words and that the people who broke the law should be responsible for their actions."
Zuckerberg's opening statement was made before a Senate hearing about extremism and misinformation, as social media has been widely blamed for amplifying calls to violence that contributed to the Jan. 6 attempt to violently overturn the election results.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai also faced tough questions from lawmakers Thursday regarding their own platforms and what they are doing to combat hate speech and extremism.
