Military watchdog's testimony contradicts defence minister

CA, 26 Mar 2021
The high profile investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Canada’s top general took another turn today. Canada’s military watchdog rejected the defence ministers claims about what powers his office had to look into the complaint. The contradiction came to light in testimony before a House of Commons committee investigating the matter.

The Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) new acting chief of defence staff says the force will work to “re-establish trust where it has been broken,” in a letter to members released Wednesday.

“Recent sexual misconduct revelations and allegations are very disturbing, have shaken us, and made clear how much farther we need to go to be the CAF that our people deserve, and Canadians expect,” Lt.-Gen Wayne Eyre wrote.

Mercedes Stephenson reports.
