China's top legislative body, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, voted 167-0 on March 30, 2021, to endorse a proposal slashing the number of directly elected seats in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council. It has also created a vetting body to determine who can stand for office. Members of China’s top political advisory body will be part of the Election Committee choosing Hong Kong’s new leader next year. The Election Committee will also send 40 representatives to Legco, which is expanding from 70 to 90 seats. The police’s national security unit will help vet candidates looking to run for Legco.
The move follows a previous resolution passed on March 11, 2021, to overhaul Hong Kong’s electoral system to ensure only “patriots” would rule the city.
