Over 200 Chinese vessels have been seen anchored around Whitsun Reef, west of Palawan in the Philippines. The area in the South China Sea is considered part of the country’s exclusive economic zone, according to the International Court of Arbitration. The Philippines believes the parked ships are being controlled by Chinese militia and have ordered them to leave immediately. However, China has dismissed all claims, saying that it is “perfectly normal” for its fishing boats to use the zone as an important wind shelter.
