Polls open in Congo Republic presidential election

CA, 21 Mar 2021
Polls opened in the Republic of Congo on Sunday, with President Denis Sassou Nguesso widely expected to extend his 36-year rule amid an ongoing economic crisis and accusations of having mismanaged the country's oil revenues.

With Sassou's grip on power firm, diplomats and analysts doubt any of his six opponents will unseat him.

Observers are optimistic that the vote will be peaceful, in contrast to the last election in 2016 that was marred by sporadic violence.

The government signed a peace accord with an anti-Sassou rebel group in 2017, quieting a conflict in southern Congo.

Results are expected to be published within four days of voting. If no candidate secures more than 50 per cent of votes, a second round will take place 15 days later.
