Trump Supreme Court pick Amy Coney Barrett meets with Republican Senators, VP Pence

CA, 30 Sep 2020
Amy Coney Barrett, U.S. President Donald Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, met with Vice-President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican senators on Tuesday before an expected fast-track confirmation process set to begin mid-October.

During the meetings, Pence lauded Barrett as someone of great character and intellect who would "uphold the constitution of the United States." Sen. Ted Cruz also addressed Democrats calling for Barrett to recuse herself from potential election-related cases that could reach the court, saying she should not if confirmed. He added the Senate should act to confirm her because having a court that could potentially split 4-4 could be problematic in election-related cases.

The Senate is expected to begin hearings on Oct. 12, though it's not yet clear if McConnell will try for a vote on her confirmation before the election, a question he did not answer when asked Tuesday.
