Food insecurity is rising sharply in Myanmar in the wake of a military coup and deepening financial crisis in the country, according to the United Nations. In an analysis released on April 22, 2021, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned that up to 3.4 million more people will go hungry in Myanmar in the next three to six months as the political crisis worsens. The UN agency said about 2.8 million people in Myanmar were already considered food insecure before the military coup on February 1.
