Sudan protests: Security forces fire tear gas at protesters in latest demonstrations
CA, 05 Jan 2022
Protesters and security forces clashed on Tuesday in the latest round of demonstrations against a military coup that began in October 2021, with tear gas being fired at those opposing military rule.
The protests come just two days after Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned. He had been in office from 2019 until the coup, but was reinstated in November following an agreement with the military that protesters widely rejected.
According to reports, the protests Tuesday were also in response to recent protester deaths across the Sudanese capital Khartoum and neighbouring cities. Medics report about 57 people have been killed in protests since October.
