COVID-19: WHO provides update as world's Omicron cases continue to climb | LIVE

CA, 06 Jan 2022
The World Health Organization (WHO) will provide a virtual update Thursday as cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant continue to climb across the globe.

The organization said Tuesday that more evidence is emerging that the Omicron variant is causing milder symptoms than previous variants and resulting in a "decoupling" in some places between soaring case numbers and low death rates.

The WHO cautions however that the Omicron's high transmissibility means it poses a threat to medical systems in countries where a high proportion of the population remains unvaccinated.

WHO data shows the heavily mutated variant spread quickly since it was first detected in November and emerged in 128 countries.
