Mountains of rotting garbage the next problem for flood-hit Germany

CA, 22 Jul 2021
Mountains of garbage and debris piled up on the streets across German cities, as the clean-up continued in the wake of catastrophic flooding in western Europe.

Aid organizations, private companies, the military and emergency services continue to clear roads and set up drinking water stations where the mountains of rubbish are growing and growing.

With more garbage than companies can keep up with, residents of the affected areas now fear the rotting food and damp household goods will set off another crisis of rodents and illnesses.

"The rubbish is now in piles all over. But the next big problem is going to be the huge piles of household rubbish. It stinks everywhere, these piles are made up of rotten fridge contents, freezer contents and people don't know what to do with it all any more. We have beaten corona but if we now get the bacteria, the rats and more viruses then that will be our problem. So the next thing that needs to be resolved is the rubbish problem," said Bad Neuenahr resident Hans-Peter Bleken.

For immediate relief, the federal government will initially provide up to 200 million euros in emergency aid, and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said more funds can be made available if needed.
