France: AUKUS security pact a 'stab in the back' that 'betrayed trust'

The French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian expressed anger after Australia announced it would be backing out of a French deal to build diesel powered submarines.

Australia have instead signed a nuclear submarine deal with the US as part of the newly-announced AUKUS agreement.

Le Drian branded the move as a "stab in the back" whilst adding that France's trust in Australia had been "betrayed."

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said that his country decided to instead invest in the US nuclear-powered submarines because of a changed strategic environment.

The country's nuclear-powered submarine fleet will be built in conjunction with both the US and the UK under a newly announced security alliance of those nations.
