A pachinko parlour in the Japanese city of Osaka has been converted into a makeshift vaccination site to accelerate the nation’s roll-out of Covid-19 vaccinations. About 1,500 people were lined up for jabs on September 14, 2021, after the parlour was closed for two days to first inoculate employees, arcade members and neighbours. Japan started its vaccination campaign in mid-February, months behind many other countries. The pace of vaccinations picked up in late May and has grown to about 1 million doses per day. About 60 per cent of Japan’s population is expected to be fully vaccinated by the end of September.
