Migrants cling on to rocks as they are rescued off the coast of Italy
Telegraph, 09 Sep 2021
The Italian coast guard has rescued 125 migrants clinging to rocks on the shores of Isola dei Conigli, a small island close to Lampedusa.
The migrants had been travelling on different boats, at least one of which had almost sunk, and rescuers said the rescue mission was particularly challenging because of the rough seas.
Using an inflatable mattress, the coast guard winched the migrants from the shore to their rescue vessel.
Among the rescued were 49 women and 20 children, who officials said were “in a clear state of shock”.
The group was taken to the island of Lampedusa where they will be held in a holding centre.
