Turkey's Erdoğan says majority of wildfires are contained

CA, 01 Aug 2021
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday a majority of the country's wildfires were now contained as firefighting support teams and planes were sent to help from Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine and Iran.

Speaking in the Mediterranean town of Manavgat, where firefighters continue to battle with flames, the president called for "unity" and "solidarity."

The fire spread to a broader area due to wind, broadcaster CNN Türk reported, as efforts to get it under control before it reaches a residential area continued.

Around 100 fires have burned across large areas of western and southern Turkey since Wednesday, authorities said. Six people, including two firefighters, have been killed, thousands more evacuated and many homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Smoke from the fires has drifted south across the eastern Mediterranean to Cyprus.
