U.S. death toll in 2021 surpasses last year's total

In the United States, the death toll from COVID-19 this year has already surpassed the total from last year. Data from Johns Hopkins University shows in 2020, America lost more than 352,000 lives to the disease. The toll this year so far has just topped that. To date, in 2021, COVID-19 has killed more than 707,000 people in the country. On September 5, the Washington National Cathedral tolled 700 times to commemorate the lives lost.
