La Palma volcano: Drone video shows "lava lakes" flowing as earthquakes rattle island
CA, 06 Oct 2021
Dozens of earthquakes were reported on the Spanish island of La Palma over the past couple of days, while red-hot lava continued to flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
Drone footage showed the increased activity of the volcano after part of the crater collapsed and unleashed a cascade of faster-moving and thicker lava.
One official said the crater was "like a dam" because when the wall collapsed, fiery molten rock poured out from a "lava lake" inside.
Roughly 1,000 buildings have been destroyed since the eruption began on September 19 and 6,000 people have been evacuated.
