Trudeau, Freeland announce COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for federal workers by end of October | FULL

CA, 06 Oct 2021
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, alongside Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, is expected to announce a new policy of mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for employees in federally regulated workplaces.

The policy will also impact anyone wanting to board a plane or train in Canada and is expected to go into effect by the end of the month.

Trudeau made the promise in early August, just prior to the federal election, to implement the policy.

Since then, Treasury Board officials have been working out the details, including consequences workers could face if they refuse to get vaccinated in consultation with affected unions. An executive from one of the unions said a draft policy had been circulated that would require even employees who work from home to be fully vaccinated if they want to keep their jobs.

The policy is expected to allow only for very narrow medical exemptions.
