The Cambodian Mine Action Centre has been retraining dogs to sniff out the Covid-19 virus. The animals in the programme originally were put to work detecting underground explosives in the country where an estimated 4-6 million landmines were buried during the nation’s 1968-1975 civil war. Handlers say dogs are more efficient at finding the coronavirus than other detection tools, and they hope sniffer dogs can be deployed at major public events, including sports matches and international meetings. In addition to Cambodia, Ecuador, Italy and some other countries have also started forming canine detection units to fight the spread of Covid-19.
