Thousands of displaced people are living in makeshift camps in parks across the Afghan capital Kabul. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that as of August 2021, more than 3.5 million people in the country had been forced to leave their homes. The UN said many became homeless because of the abrupt US withdrawal from Afghanistan, where poverty and hunger only deepened the misery for people struggling with drought conditions and the Covid-19 pandemic. Foreign donors including those in the US, China and Pakistan had pledged more than US$1.1 billion in aid as of September. But UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi said large-scale, unconditional humanitarian assistance is needed to prevent the crisis from deepening.
