Gazans search for wounded after Israeli airstrikes leave 42 dead

CA, 16 May 2021
Palestinians in Gaza searched for residents under rubble and debris on Sunday morning, as hostilities between Israel and Gaza militants stretched into a seventh day.

Israel bombed the home of Hamas's chief in Gaza early on Sunday and sirens warning of rocket attacks sounded in Israeli border towns shortly after dawn.

Medics said the death toll from Israeli strikes on a main thoroughfare in Gaza City has climbed to 42.

It was the deadliest single attack since heavy fighting between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers erupted nearly a week ago. The ministry says another 50 people were wounded in Sunday’s strikes, mostly women and children.

At least 188 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 55 children and 33 women, with 1,230 people wounded. Eight people in Israel have been killed, including a 5-year-old boy and a soldier.
