US Climate Envoy John Kerry: '2020 to 2030 is the key decade of decision' | DW Interview

DW, 19 May 2021
The US Special Envoy on Climate, John Kerry has told DW the US will seek "some kind of enforcement that is credible" on protecting Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Asked what the US plans to do to hold Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro to his pledge to end illegal deforestation by 2030, Kerry stressed "we can't wait till 2030." In an exclusive interview with DW, the US Special Envoy on Climate made clear that the US now had "a different approach on that" than previously.

Kerry said the US was "encouraged" that President Bolsonaro was talking about stopping the deforestation in the Amazon and vowed to "work with the country, the sovereign nation that has control over its own land and reach some kind of an agreement if we possibly can." Yet there was obviously a "need" for credible enforcement.

Kerry also spoke of the responsibility larger, wealthier carbon emitters have toward smaller, poorer countries to fix a problem they have caused. Kerry was asked about the decision to invite Pope Francis to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), and about the limits of politicians to solve the problem of global warming.

Kerry was speaking in Berlin following a day of talks with German political and business leaders.
