The Indian state of West Bengal began a two-week lockdown on May 16, 2021, to halt the rapid spread of Covid-19. A surge in new infections struck the region after mass rallies were held for a key state election in March and early April. All offices, shops and public transport in the region have been told to remain closed until May 30. According to India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, West Bengal accounted for more than a million of India’s roughly 24 million Covid-19 cases, as of May 17.
