Live: Liaodong Bay – home for harbor seals to breed

CGTN, 20 Apr 2021
Liaodong Bay is one of eight harbor seal reproduction areas in the world. The animals usually cross the Bohai Strait in November and enter Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea for mating. They typically stay until May. In September 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs launched an action plan to establish four to six rescue stations for harbor seals and marine animals along the coast of Liaoning, Shandong and Hebei provinces. The plan is in place until 2026.
Hunting have led to the decline of many seal populations. In the past, millions of seals were killed for their valuable meat, blubber and pelts. In some countries seals are still being killed in large numbers because fishermen blame them for the decline in fish.
CGTN's Guan Yang takes you to Liaodong Bay to see these national rare species and learn about the latest protective measures to keep the animals from extinction.
