China has built an ultra-long horizontal onshore oil well in northwest Gansu province. Completed on June 8, 2021, the project is currently the largest oil and gas field in the country. The well measures 5,060 metres (16,600 feet) horizontally, and if raised vertically would be about three-fifths the height of Mount Everest. It is expected to improve efficiency of oil reservoir extraction.
