Napoleon I died in exile on 5 May 1821 on the island of St Helena. In 1840, King Louis-Philippe decided to repatriate the emperor's body for burial in Paris. After several weeks of travel, Napoleon's coffin arrived in Paris to be placed under the Dome of the Invalides in December 1840.
