Since October 2020, the amount of rainfall recorded in southern China has been 50-80 per cent below normal. The prolonged drought has so far left about 470,000 people in rural areas of the country without sufficient drinking water supplies, according to the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources. One of the worst-hit regions is in the southwestern province of Yunnan, where 46 counties and districts are facing varying degrees of drought.
