Canada had about 140 residential schools, and thousands of children are estimated to have died while living in cramped, abusive conditions. As Eric Sorensen explains, nearly one-third of the students who died or went missing weren’t named, and calls are growing for the federal government to release the records from every school.

“Pension?” is what Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennet texted to Independent MP Jody Wilson-Raybould, in response to a tweet calling out the prime minister’s reconciliation efforts.
