Serbian defence minister, US ambassador hope for peaceful political resolution in Kosovo

CA, 01 Jun 2023
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have flared up in recent days, reigniting a conflict in the region. On Tuesday, NATO announced it will be sending 700 additional troops to northern Kosovo a day after over 30 were injured due to protests in the region. The conflict between the two countries is deep-rooted, with an election held in late April driving the recent flare in tensions.

On Wednesday, Serbia's Defence Minister Miloš Vučević said officials and military in Belgrade, Serbia must make every effort to find a peaceful political resolution for Kosovo. Vučević gave a statement published by the Serbian Ministry of Defence as he was inspecting soldiers near the border with Kosovo, after President Aleksandar Vučić placed the country's army on full combat alert and ordered its units to move closer to the border with Kosovo.

Meanwhile, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said separately that he did not intend to remove the elected ethnic Albanian mayors from their positions in the Serb-populated northern part of Kosovo. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama also added that focusing on the Serbian army at the border is the most “incredibly emotional show of internal politics.”

Finally, the U.S. ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill also urged all parties in the Balkans to restore calm, saying both sides needed to make efforts and want to see “Serbia continue this journey into the West.”
